THE JOKE IS ON ME - Written by Carroll Bryant
All through my life you know that I should have seen
The pattern of my map that always ran consistently
Never a change no matter how good it seems
I have to figure out how to shut off these crazy dreams
And if I should ever touch the sun
I'll cry myself a tear for the way that I made it
But if I should ever find out that I can have none
I'll cry myself a river for the way that I faded out
They say the best things in life are free
But that is just a poor mans joke, I know
Because the joke is on me
Which way to turn as to win or to lose?
But my life will be so empty regardless of what I choose
My luck isn't changing with no prospects in my sights
The things I thought would lift me up brought me down into the night
If I should ever fly through the sky
I'll cry myself a tear for the loneliest flight
But if I should ever quit long before I die
I'll cry myself a river for the way I never tried
They say that life is in the song that you sing
But that is just a musical joke, I know
Because the joke is on me
All I ever do these days is pick myself back off the ground
I turn around and sure enough the world is upside down
Before I can even recover the wind swirls me around
And I just fall back down again
I know that I cannot win
Watching in the mirror as my soul turns into dust
If I should ever find a way to reach the top
I'll cry myself a tear for all the time that had unfolded
But if I should ever decide to come to a complete stop
I'll cry myself a river for a story that concluded
They talk about what joy life can be
But that is just another joke, I know
Because the joke is on me
